Understanding Alopecia Areata Disease

Alopecia areata is a disease that is usually distinguished by loss of hair on the scalp that happens in distinct circular patches. It is an autoimmune disease that is brought about by the attack of a person’s immune system on the hair follicles. The exact cause of the disease is still unknown.  Some people are more susceptible to the disease due to their genes. If there is already a case in the family, then the person is at a higher risk of getting the disease.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved many drugs for treating alopecia. They are:

Minoxidil, that is commonly known as Rogaine, is available over the counter. It is approved by the FDA and can be used by both men and women. It comes in liquid form. You need to rub it onto the scalp twice a day for preventing loss of hair and encouraging hair growth.

Finasteride or Propecia is used to treat male pattern baldness. It is available in pill form. You will need to use it continuously for a few months for hair to grow.

Corticosteroids is an anti-inflammatory drug that is directly injected into the scalp in order to treat alopecia areata. Cortisone creams and ointments are also available but they may not be as effective as the injections.

People suffering from the disease can also opt for surgical procedures like hair transplants.
