Baybelle, you can of course alternate between the Milkshake and Custard. Now, you can use either product on the hair, just not both at the same time.
Also, Moist Curls is designed to be used in any of the CurlyQ stylers, by the way.
Now, when it comes to choosing which product to use on your child's hair, the state of your child's hair will tell you. If it is feeling extra dry, is rather tangled or matted, then using a heavier product like the Custard would be best. And, if it looks slightly dry or dehydrated or the style you plan to put your child's hair in requires a smoother look to it, then it would be best to go with a lighter product like the Milkshake.
