Welcome Flower!
I am not 100 percent sure but it seems like you have Type 4 curls around the sides and back of your hair, while you have Type 3 curls everywhere else on your head.
Now, whenever you do use Curls Milkshake or any of the other styling creams always start off with smaller amounts. Also, before putting them on always make sure that you hair has been thoroughly dampened all over with Curls Quenched Moisturizer first. As, this will allow any of the Curls styling creams to penerate quicker and deeper in a faster amount of time than without.
Don't worrry, as when I first started using Curls Whipped Cream and Souffle after they had first came out I did experiment with using them on dry hair. And, that ended up giving me poor results with my hair looking shrunken and white spots of product still visible in my hair. So, I have learned never to do that again. As, I always make sure that whenever I use Curls Milkshake, Curls Whipped Cream, or even Curls Souffle goes on thoroughly dampened hair first.
Curls Souffle acts like a curl activating product in my hair, which means that it gives me some shrinkage because of how curl defining it is. Now, Curls Milkshake can be used as either a moisturizer or styling cream. So, if it doesn't work for you as an all-in one styling product then using it as a leave-in moisturizer (at night) would be your next step. Which means, you woud take a small amount of Curls Milkshake (you do not have to spray Curls Quenched first), emulsify it slightly between your fingers in order to help warm it up and then make sure to even distribute it all over your head. And, be sure to thoroughly smooth it through, in order to avoid having any left over white residue visible in your head.
You can try using Curls Whipped Cream and see that product works for your hair. As, it does help with stretching out one's curl to an extent and it is designed to work for twisting the hair as well. Now, it is the most moisturizing product that Curls makes, so being heavy handed with this product is a definite no-no. I am a 3B and I can use any of the creams in my hair as it is naturally very dry and I have both medium and thick (coarse) curls on my head. The two styling products that I use the most out of the Curls line is Curls Whipped Cream and Curls Milkshake. And, now that the weather is warmer, I still do use Curls Whipped Cream but not as much as I do Curls Milkshake. And, when I do use either product I use them as stand alone stylers. But, I personally know that with Curls Milkshake not all curlies will be able to use this product as a stand alone styler. As, there are ceertainly other curlies who have used this product as a leave-in moisturizer and have had success doing so.
Overall, I would suggest that you try tweaking your regimen like I have suggested and see how well that works out for you.
