Welcome!

The Curls products are designed to be used by people who have Type 2 thru Type 4 hairtypes. Therefore, anyone who has way all the way up to kinky hair can use products from this line. So, your daughter's type 4B grade of hair is perfect for using these products. As, this line is not exclusively for people who have looser grades of hair at all. Instead, it is a multitude of naturalky curly hairtextures instead.

Type 4s often think that they don't have curly hair. But, this isn't true. As, a Type 4 hairtype consists of tight and densely packed coils. And, coils are just another named for curls that are noticeably tighter in shape.

I applaud you for using quality products on your daughter's hair. As, most drugstore products contain poor ingredients in them such as mineral oil or petrolatum. And, they do absolutely nothing for the hair except give a false illusion of providing deep down moisturization to the hair. So, by not using products that have poor ingredients in them, then you are certainly doing the right thing by using natural products with quality ingredients on your daughter's hair instead.

Default Query

Hi I am about to purchase the recommended products for my daughter's hair. I was just wondering if the products are all natural. I was told by a hairdresser that some products such as gel contain stuff you would use for a relaxer. My daughter and I have totally natural hair and I don't want to put anything other than natural stuff in our hair.

Thanks

BarbadosGal, the Curly Q line along with the rest of the Curls products are natural products made up with several certified organic ingredients in them. So, the products are definitely safe to use.

And, the ingredient that you are referring to is "Sodium Hydroxide" which is normally referred to as "lye". Some haircare companies do use this ingredient in their chemical relaxers (in big amounts) or in other hair products (in smaller amounts) in their lines. Therefore, any time that you see the words sodium hydroxide listed in any product remember this: this is the same ingredient that is put in drain cleaners to unclog them and some products used for scrubbing floors with.

Now, of course when children are outside playing their hair will get ruffed up unfortunately. So, I would suggest you doing this in the morning: Spraying your child's hair evenly with the Moist Curls Moisturizer (about 5-7 sprays should be enough). Next, apply the CurlyQ Custard, always making sure to emulsify it a bit before applying. Now, as I said before, that amount that you would be slightly more than is usually recommended, if your daughter has BSL and/or thick hair. Once you have finished evenly distributing the CurlyQ Custard all over your child's hair, you would of course let it airdry.

Some days, after applying the Moist Curls Moisturizer you can apply the CurlyQ Milkshake to your child's hair. Next, you would just comb the product through in order to get even distribution

WHat is the difference b/w the custard and milshake?

Hello Biomommee!

Well, the differences between the CurlyQ Custard and Milkshake are these:

CurlyQ Custard-Gives maximum hydration, adds weight, adds shine, curl definition, and elongation to the hair. And, it can be used as an everyday styling product.

CurlyQ Milkshake-Gives light-to-medium hydration, adds smoothness, and reduces volume. And, it can be used as either a leave-in curl styling lotion and rinse-out conditioner.

Default Need help--3 different textures

I'm posting pics of my three girls who I believe are Types 2, 4, and 3 (left to right in the pic. A=2, K=4, L=3). My 2 has very fine, shiny, ringlets. My oldest (Type 4?) has tight coils that will become defined when moistened in the a.m., but frizz/fray by the end of the day. My youngest (Type 3?) has VERY thick, course, (wavy?) hair on the outside, but more defined ringlets underneath (the nape of the neck, for example). I'm including a few pictures so that you can see their hair and help me figure out: 1) what hair types they actually do have, and 2) where I'm going wrong in our regimen:

1. Sunday shampooing (CD conditioning rosemary/peppermint shampoo) and conditioning (with your CurlyQs conditioner)
--Wednesday "co-wash" (with the same CurlyQs conditioner)
2. Detangle (I used CurlyQs until I ran out, then a kids' formula in a purple bottle w/pink spray pump) and combout.
3. CurlyQs Milkshake (Do I need the custard for my 3 and 4?)
4. Tea Tree oil or Tui oil for the scalp (only on 3 and 4...again, too oily for my Type 2.)
5. Loose braids for sleeping
6. Remove braids in morning, respray with detangler, style hair (usually braids, twists, or cornrows. It's too long now for cute puffs.) Sometimes I'll use a natural pomade to hold down my 3's and 4's edges, but by the end of the school day, their edges are standing straight out! And occasionally I'll detangle then add a bit of the Milkshake to my 2 and "scrunch" her hair to add bounce.

Thanks for any suggestions and for helping me figure out which hair types they really have!

Picture explanations: All three: A (type 2?) on left, K (type 4? very fine, but curly/kinky) in middle, L (type 3? more wavy, but also defined curls/waves underneath...can't tell in this pic since she has twists)...Middle pic is K with twists...See the new growth?...Right pic is L just out of the shower with outer layers already dry. (This is how it looks after combing in shower with conditioner and blotting with towel to get the major drips. It still tangles easily, so I do the combout in sections and braid loosely for bed. They all sleep on satin pillowcases, and K wears a bonnet, too. I think a scarf would be better to hold her styles in overnight, but Mom needs to learn how to tie a scarf that will stay on through lots of rolling around!

Welcome Reb621! Your daughters all have such beautiful natural curls!

I am glad that you included pics of each of your daughters hair. As, I can see from each picture that their hairtypes are definitely different from each other.

Your daughter in the first picture mentioned has Type 3 A hair. Your daughter mentioned in the second picture has type 3C curls. And, your daughter mentioned in the last picture has type 3B curls.

Here's what I suggest for you:

1. Try using the Curly Q Curlie Cutie Cleansing Cream in your daughter's hair, instead of the Carol's Daughter cleanser. As, this change may provide better moisturizing benefits to your daughter's hair while it is first being cleansed.

2. After shampooing with the Curly Q Cleansing Cream, then apply the Coconut Dream Conditioner in your daughters hair and comb it through with a wide-toothed comb, put a plastic cap over their heads, and then let it sit in their heads for at least 20-25 minutes before rinsing it out of their heads.

3. After you rinse out the conditioner, you would lightly blot away any excess moisture from your daughter's hair. However, you daughter's will need to stay relatively wet for adequate product application.

4. Section your daughter's hair off in to either 4 or more sections.

5. Take one section down, spray it with Curly Q Moist Curls, detangle it with a natural-haired boar bristle brush, and then next apply CurlyQ Milkshake or CurlyQ Custard. CurlyQ Milkshake for the Type 3A daughter's hair and CurlyQ Custard for your other 2 daughers hair.

6. After you apply styling product to the first section, then thoroughly smooth it through, and braid that section.

7. Once you have finished braiding up the first section, then move on to the next section and repeat the same process (spray-detangle, apply product, and smooth through).

8. Once you have finished detangling, applying product, and braiding their hair, then just let it airdry.

9. In between hairwashes, always make sure that the children's hair are covered with a plastic cap before they get in the bathtub to bathe. As, this will protect their hair from getting wet.

10. Wearing the hair protected at night is a must. Now, you have the option of using a satin pillowcase and/or satin bonnet or satin scarf. The local beauty supply stores and even such mass-grocers like Wal-Mart sell these particular items. There's a new type of satin product called "Stay-On Satin". It is designed to prevent breakage and save hairstyles better than any ordinary satin. I bought it from Wal-Mart down the isle where they sell the hair brushes and hair elastics on. Its what I use in addition to using a satin pillowcase to sleep on. I used to use the regular hair bonnets but they would have a habit of coming unfastened while I slept. With the "Stay On Satin" it never comes off while I sleep, which makes it a dream come true for me. You can find out more about this product at Stay On Satin™.

11. At night, before the kids go to bed, detangling their hair with product in it, is another good way to help keep tangling problems at a minimum. You would of course section off their hair, apply CurlyQ Moist Curls, then detangle with the natural boar-bristle brush (always working from the bottom to the top). And, if you get to a spot that has a major tangle to it, then just spray a bit more of the CurlyQ Moist Curls to further loosen the tangle. After you have got out all of the tangles on that first section, then apply either the Curly Q Milkshake or CurlyQ Custard to their hair and braid up that section. Nw, once you have finished one section, then just go on to the next and repeat the same process all over again.

Oh and also, with any order that you place, you have the option of choosing three free product samples to your order. Therefore, I would suggest that you pick the CurlyQ Radiant Ringlets and Goddess Glaze as your sample products. As, I noticed that you mentioned about your daughter's hair not being able to stay completely smooth around the edges. So, because either product has the ability to smooth the hair, then trying these products could be of an advantage to your daughters hair as well.

Default more style pics

These are from 2 years ago, but it gives an idea of what each hair type is capable of holding re: styles. A's and L's hair won't hold cornrows for long, but K's will hold for 2 weeks. This particular style was done by a salon student who was pressing an older woman's hair at the same time...took 4 hours to do this, so now I do it myself. I can't get her to sit for much more than an hour at a time, so I'll braid in stages, and I don't do them this small unless I just cornrow halfway back, then box braids the rest of the way down. I have no idea how to braid from the nape of the neck UP other than having her stand on her head, so if you have any tips for that, too, I'd be much obliged!

ADDED: Wow, your reply was quick! I'm so glad I asked, as you can see I was completely off! Thanks again, now I can buy the correct products!

I just read your post. I was wondering if you could post some pics of your daughter's hair so I can see what the curls line has done for it. My daughter also has kinky 4B hair. I've just started using the line so I'm curious to see your daughter's hair since "she's" been a long-time user. Lol. I posted pics of my daughter under a different thread if you want to look her up. Her hair looks nice but it's after I spent awhile doing it using products that after a couple days, leave her hair looking dirty. Please reply when you get a chance. Thanks!

Default Radiant Ringlets

Can you use radiant ringlets as a heat protectant? And does it work as a scalp conditioner also? Thanks!
