Default How do I use oil??

I need some advice on how to use oils on my daughter's hair. She is almost two, and is bi-racial (black/white). She still does not have a whole lot of hair....i can just now get a small ponytail puff on the top of her head, but its not long enough in the back or on the sides to do anything with. She has very tight curls, and a combo of fine/medium texture hair. I only use curly q's products on her hair, other than oil.....which I hope you come out with soon! Well we were out and about one day and a woman stopped us and was commenting on how beautiful my daughter was. So she commented that a great product for bi-racial hair was coconut oil, and reccomended trying it. I of course openly welcome any help and advice on how to care for my daughter's hair, so I went EVERYWHERE to try and find some coconut oil. I began "researching" oils to try and learn about the benefits/uses. I found some 100% pure sweet almond oil, and a product called Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk Self-Heating Coconut Oil (even tho its not pure coconut oil). They both seem to work very well, making her hair extremely soft and shiny without leaving it oily. My question is, is there a PROPER way to use oils? I have read so many different "methods" on how to use oils. I usually just put some in my hand and massage it through her hair after i shampoo/condition it. I sometimes use it on her dry hair, with or without the curls moisturizer. I have read to massage it in dry hair before shampooing, to mix a few drops with shampoo and/or conditioner, to use after shampooing etc......so is there really a preferred method to use oils??

Hi! I am glad to hear that your daughter's hair is looking so good that others people are stopping to comment on it! That's a great way to tell that your product is working!

Well, yes the lady is right about coconut oil! It was "love after first use" when I started using coconut oil. It is a staple product in my regimen. Now, you can use it as a hot oil treatment, mixed in with any of your haircare products, applied to wet or dry hair, as a pre-poo, for dry scalp. The best type of coconut oil is the one that is 100 % and unrefined. Because, products that are refined lose a lot of their natural benefits during processing. I don't have one main brand of coconut oil that I have stuck with, as I sometimes buy from off the internet, or when I have a chance to go to Kroger's then I will buy some from there. Oh, and Wal-Mart does sell LouAna 100% coconut oil down their cooking oil isle (I don't know if it is sold in all Wal-Marts though). However, it doesn't say whether it is refined or unrefined. I have used this one before as well, because it is really cheap and I have found that it works just as well as higher priced coconut oils.

One brand that you should definitely stay away from is Parachute's 100% Unrefined Coconut Oil. That stuff has a strong odor. Most of the one's that I have tried have a very slight true coconut aroma, certainly nothing offensive! So, I don't know what is up with Parachute's brand of coconut oil, unfortunately!

Here's a great place where I have gotten my last order of 100% coconut oil from - Centrifuged Coconut Oil

And, here's a great recipe "For Shiny and Soft Hair"

1 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil
3 Tablespoons of Sour Cream

*Mix the ingredients and then apply them on hair.
* Wrap a towel around it and let it rest for 30 minutes
* Shampoo and rinse off well

You can use this on your daughter's hair or even on your hair if you'd like!
