Default Help! My hair turned out Hard

I tried some of the Curls line for the first time last night and my hair was super hard this morning. I'm thinking maybe I put to much of the whipped cream in my hair. I used the washing cream/rinse, the coconut conditioner and the curl ecstasy with heat. Afterwards while my hair was still wet it felt so nice and soft. I then put the whipped cream in it and did a roller set and let it air dry. When I woke up this morning my hair was incredibly hard. What do you think I did wrong?

Darlene, I am a bit stumped about your hair coming out hard after using Curls Whipped Cream in it, becaues it has no strong holding polymers in it at all to make the hair feel hard or stiff. Now, I can offer you this advise on how you should have done your rollerset. You would of course use the Curls Cleansing Cream first to wash your hair, then you would use either the Coconut Sublime or Asian Hair Tea Conditioner (never both of them on the same day). Next, to rollerset, you would take a small section of hair at a time, spray it with "setting lotion", use a seamless comb to detangle the hair (working your way from the bottom to the top), and then lastly just apply the roller to the small section of hair that you just detangled. Then you can just let your hair airdry with the rollers in it instead of using heat to dry your hair with instead.

Curls Whipped Cream is not designed to be used as a setting product for the hair. As, it is too heavy for that. Because, in order to have a good rollerset you much use a setting product that is lightweight on the hair.

Also, Darlene I am going to tell you this about using the products to wear your hair out curly. You can do twistouts or braidouts to do so, instead of rollersetting your hair. After washing and conditioning your hair, you would then let it stay fairly soaking wet. The products are to go on soaking wet and not semi-wet hair. Now, yuo can lighly blot your hair with paper towel to get rid of any excess drippings. But, preserving as much water in your hair after washing anf conditioning in it is designed to work towards and not against any one who has naturally curly (waves, spirals, coils) hair. And, by naturaly curly hair I mean the hair that you developed as you matured after birth.

While your hair is still soaking wet, you would section your hair off into 4 or parts (depending on how thick or long your hair is). After sectioning off the hair, you would then take one section spray it with Curls Quenched from root to tip. Once you have finished doing so, then you will detangle your hair with a brush (starting from the bottom and slowly work your way up to the top). Next, you would then apply Curls Whipped Cream to that first section of hair (making sure to thoroughly smooth it through). Lastly, you would just either braid the section or twist it.

After you have finished doing detangling, applying product, and braiding/twisting the first section then you would just move on to another section and repeat the same steps.

Once you have finished doing your whole head, then you just let it airdry. When bathing, you cover your hair with a plastic cap, in order to keep your hair from shrinking or frizzing up. And, at night you can either cover your hair with a satin bonnet or sleep on a satin pillowcase, in order to keep your hair from becoming tanled and matted while your are sleeping.

In the morning, you would just take down your braids/twists and then re-spray your head all over with the Curls Quenched just to re-fresh your hair after having been sleeping on all night. You should only spray enough to dampen your hair only. As, it should never be dripping wet after spraying it in the mornings. Make sure to next massage Curls Quenched into your hair for about a minute. And, lastly, you would take a little bit of Curls Whipped Cream and apply it to your hair to finish off the style (always making sure to throughly smooth it through your hair).

Also, you have the option after you have applied Curls Whipped Cream to your hair to scrunch your hair in order to get more body to it.

Sepending on how long your braidouts/twistouts last in your hair you may or may not have to re-twist or re-braid your hair on a nightly basis. But, when you do re-twist or re-braid your hair at night, you just section your hair off into 4 or more parts first. Next, you take a section, spray it with Curls Quenched first, detangle it with a brush, and then apply Curls Whipped Cream (throughly smooth it through) and lastly just braid or twist that first section. Once you have finished your first section, then you just take another section of hair down and repeat the same steps all over again.

The Curls styling creams, especially Curls Souffle and Whipped Cream are concentrated in consistency. As, the Curls Whipped Cream that you have is actually the most concentrated styling cream that Curls makes. Therefore, always emulsify the products first before applying them to your hair. Because, this will allow the products to deeply penetrate in a quicker fashion. Also, don't use large amounts of Curls Souffle or Whipped Cream on the hair at any given time. Because, one can actually cause the products to buildup quicker in the hair that way. I know that I am someone who used to be used to having to use a lot of product in my hair in order for it to look tamed. But, when using heavier products, "less is always more", as they say.

I hope all of this info helps you out and if you have any more questions then definitely feel free to ask away at any time!

I am glad that you are liking the results, but I don't recommend you using the Curls Quenched, Milkshake, Whipped Cream or Souffle all together. As, the products are not designed to be specifically used that way. As, Curls Whipped Cream and Curls Souffle are both designed to give weight to the hair, with Curls Whipped Cream giving the most amount of weight. Therefore, using either styling cream with Curls Milkshake as well as Curls Quenched Moisturizer is just overloading your hair with too much product actually. Curls Quenched Moisturizer is designed to be used on wet and dry hair and after applying it to the hair you would layer it with either Curls Milkshake, Curls Whipped Cream, or Curls Souffle to style your hair with. Layering the products that you mentioned will keep you having to co-wash your hair on a daily basis to combat the buildup. And, when your hair is dry, washing (co-washing or shampooing) the hair everyday is not allowing your hair the opportunity to really retain moisture.

Default frustrated newfound 4 (i think)

hello
i've read all of your other helpful tips so i'm hoping you can make some recommendations for me. i recently purchased the transitioning kit and tried it for the first time hoping to get a decent wash and go. i'm working on my
6th month of growing out my relaxer and don't want to do the bc. after applying all of the products in the suggested order, my hair was hard w/more curls in the back and on the relaxed ends. the sides and tops didn't curl/wave; they just frizzed. i was really hoping to get all over curl definition. do i have to cut all of the relaxed hair off to get the full effect? i plan to try the routine again tomorrow morning using more product but i see you don't advise washing/cowashing the hair on a daily basis. please help. thanks in advance.

Hello!

Since you believe that you are a Type 4 and you have been transitioning for upwards of 6 months thus far, I can personally tell you that the Milkshake that is in the Transitioning Kit wouldn't be the right product for you. As, I'm sure that your hair is probably loaded with a lot of new growth at this. The right styling product for you would be either the Souffle or Whipped Cream. But, because I don't know exactly if you are a Type 4 A, B, or C it doesn't leave me with all that much to go on as far as exactly what your real hair type is.

If you are truly a Type 4, depending on your new growth. Because, its the new growth that is your natural unaltered hair. So, if your hair has a tightnes to the curl pattern, it will form a coil. Mattresses are made up of individual coils that are invisible, unless you take your mattress apart to see. Now, coils or corkscrews are nothing more than very tightly wound curls. Oh, and yes most Black people have a curl pattern to their hair, even though of them don't believe it to be true. As, if they don't see the type of curls that Cree Summer has sprouting from her head then, you have a hard time changing their minds otherwise. Even the African people that you see with very, very kinky hair have curl patterns to their hair too. It's just that the curl pattern is so tightly curled, till it forms a tight coil/corkscrew. So, it makes the hair look very compacted.

Your hair has curls to it, but its just that your hair forms coil/corkscrew type of curls versus waves (Wavy curls/Type 2) or spiral curls (Botticelli curls/Type 3).

Now, I am going to give you step by step directions on how to use the products okay.

1. Make sure that your hair stays soaking wet after rinsing out the conditioner. You are to never rub the hair, but you are to instead ligthly blot the hair a few time to just lightly rid the hair of a small amount of water. But, because curly hair loves moisture, the more water that your hair retains the better.

2. Section of the hair into 4 or more sections. Use hair clips to keep the hair sectioned.

3. Take your first section, and then spray it with Curls Quenched, detangle it with a brush (working your way from the bottom slowly up to the top), and then apply Curls Souffle/Curls Whipped to it (making sure to thoroughly smooth the product through with your fingers).

4. Next, you will move on to your next section and repeat the same steps all over again (spray, detangle, apply product, smooth it through).

5. You will scrunch your hair all over. Scrunching is done in order to better enhance your hair's texture.

6. Lastly, you will just let your hair fully airdry without touching it.

Before bathing at night, you will cover you hair with a plastic cap to keep it from getting wet. And, at night, you would either sleep with a satin bonnet on your head, or you would sleep on a satin pillowcase in order to keep your curls from getting excessively matted or tangled while you sleep.

In the mornings, you would re-spray your hair all over with Curls Quenched. You would do this in order to first refresh your curls after they have been slept on. You are to spray only enough to dampen your hair, as you hair should not be left dripping wet. Lastly, you would re-apply a little bit of Curls Souffle/Whipped Cream and then you would scrunch your curls into better form.

Curls Souffle and Curls Whippe Cream are concentrated products. So, you will need to emulsify either cream before applying it to your hair okay. And, do not glob the product on in large amounts. As, it is always best to start off with smaller amounts when it comes to using concentrated products of this nature. Oh, and you would either use the Curl Soufle in your hair one or the Whipped Cream the next. As, they weren't created to be layered over each other or combined, okay.

I would honestly suggest that you get a full-sized Curl Souffle and during checkout, when you see the "Comment" box come up just put in in that yu would like 3 free samples of the Curls Whipped Cream sent to you okay. As, with every order you can get three free samples of your choice sent out to you along with your order.

And, definitely keep me posted on how things go from here okay!

Default frustrated 4 is back

soblessed, i hope your name rings true because you certainly help so many; you definitely deserve it. i did some research through the forum and found the transitioners section. judging from what you advised another poster who sent a pic, i think i'm a 4c. i hate that i have to guess at it but i don't have a way to upload any photos of my poofiness. after close inspection of my roots, i think i have a lot of waves going on. no spirals. and from i've been told by various stylists, i have thick hair. so it's probably course. and i know it's really big. i will definitely try the souffle and whipped cream. i tried the kit again this morning and it was more of the same. unfortunately i was mid-way through my work day before i caught a glimpse of how truly crazy i looked. picture a wet, poofy, 1/4 part frizzy, 1/4 kind of straight, 1/4 limp, 1/8 curly, 1/8 indescribable mess. add a headband for semblance of control. i hope the products come soon so i can try it your way. i'll keep you posted. thanks for your help soblessed!
p.s. - can you recommend a way to identify one's hair type? i can't find an answer on the forum and the google results are confusing. thanks a lot again.
