Curly Q's
CURLS Hair Texture Chart
Andre Walker, Oprah’s beloved hair stylist, created a broad-spectrum hair typing system that classifies various hair textures and breaks each hair type down into 4 types with added sub categories. I believe this chart is especially useful when determining what products to use for your hair texture. However, you must realize that this system has its limitations. First of all, most curly women and girls have at least 2 different textures of hair on their head…this chart does not address this variance. Also there are so many different sub categories that can be added to all of the curly sections categories that could and should go beyond A, B, & C. Nonetheless, I do believe it was the first and is the best classification available to date.
Type 1 - STRAIGHT HAIR
Straight hair is classified as a 1. Straight hair reflects the most sheen. It is also the most resilient hair of all of the hair types. It is hard to damage and next to impossible to curl this hair texture. Because the sebum (natural oil produced in the sebaceous glands of the scalp) gently works its way from the scalp to the ends without the interference of curls or kinks, it is the most oily hair texture of all.

Type 2 - WAVY HAIR
Wavy hair is classified as a 2. Wavy hair lies somewhere between straight and curly hair. It also imparts sheen, more than curly hair, but less than straight hair. The further down the wavy spectrum you go the less sheen the hair will impart. Wavy hair is typically more prone to frizz. While type A wavies can easily alternate between straight and curly styles, type B and C Wavy hair is resistant to styling.

Type 3 - CURLY HAIR
Type 3 hair is curly hair. If you pull a strand of a type 3 curly, you will notice it has a definite S shape. Granted, the S may be a lower case s or upper case S, or it may even resemble a Z on some occasions…however, there is a definite curl pattern in place, with our without products. This hair type is full bodied, climate dependent (humidity = frizz), and damage prone. Lack of proper care renders dull curls.

Type 4 - KINKY HAIR
Type 4 is Kinky hair. Despite many misconceptions, this tightly coiled hair is quite fine and fragile. It is wiry, and delicate by nature. Each strand usually has a zig zag pattern. It is the most prone to breakage and requires a gentle touch. Treat this hair type like a fine silk blouse – cleanse gently, detangle softly, and avoid harsh chemicals.

Transitioning Back To Natural?
CURLS Has the Regime For You!

First of all, CONGRATS ON YOUR DECISION TO GO NATURAL! Going from relaxed to natural curl, naptural or kink requires patience, a solid hair care regime and an armor of quality products.
We have a custom regime, "Transitioning Diva Kit" that has all of the essentials you need to keep your hair healthy through this natural transitioning process!
Starting your new natural journey, you have a few choices:
You can grow the perm out (which takes time and patience),
Cut off all of the chemicals all at once
Cut half of it off and get regular trims (~ 3-4") every 3 months to speed up the process.
Unfortunately, there isn't a quick fix for this situation...you will have to do what is right for you.
Very important note: the point where your natural and your relaxed hair meet is THE most vulnerable...therefore is more likely to break if not properly handled, hydrated and taken care of. You want to keep your hair well conditioned and hydrated to ensure a smooth transition.
Ok...here are a few key steps that you must commit to.
1. You definitely need to start by getting a deep treatment with heat WEEKLY for the next few months. Invest in the Microhaircap, now available on our website (and a few plastic caps to cover your hair). This portable invention allows you to do chores, check email, etc. while conditioning at the same. You no longer have to sit under a hot dryer or go to a salon for deep treatment…invest $17 in a Microhaircap and do it yourself! Your hair needs a conditioner that is geared to replenish chemically altered hair. CURL Ecstasy Hair Tea conditiner will transform your dry, chemically damaged, over stressed tresses within minutes! This magical Asian tea formulation combines natural botanicals and vitamin packed extracts with rich, exotic emollients to moisturize, condition, strengthen and protect your delicate locks.
2. It is imperative that you moisturize your hair daily... Our Quenched Curls moisturizer is a great option. It softens the hair, eases comb ability, moisturizes and conditions, preps it for the next step, and leaves a little goodness behind. Use this daily.
3. Over shampooing and under conditioning are common culprits for dry, frizzy hair. Therefore, shampooing more than 1x a week is not recommended. I recommend shampooing 2-3x a month, for dry and/or damaged hair, and 1x a week for undamaged curly hair. On the other "shampoo-less" days do a conditioning rinse - rinse hair to remove styling products (this is where using the right products that are water soluble come in....such as our products), apply an ample amount of our conditioner, comb through, rinse and proceed with styling. Doing so will pump much needed moisture back into your hair without stripping away essential nutrients, rinse away unnecessary dirt and oil and give you a fresh clean start.
4. Also, using the right products, with quality ingredients is absolutely necessary. Avoid products with mineral and/or petrolatum oil in them...as both of these synthetic oils coat and suffocate the hair shaft, blocking moisture out...thus drying out the hair. If applied directly to the scalp, mineral and petrolatum oil can actually retard growth. If your hair requires oil, always opt for a natural oil such as our pure pomegranate oil...or jojoba, coconut, almond, etc. These natural oils actually penetrate and moisturize the hair. Also avoid drying products such as gel, hairspray and mousse. If you need curl hold, opt for curl enhancers, lotions and creams such as our Curls Milkshake.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE CURLS MILKSHAKE DURING YOUR TRANSITION...YOU WILL LOVE IT!
Curls Milkshake is the perfect product for transitioners. It helps to “bridge the gap” between the natural and relaxed hair and works well as “new growth smoother.” It is the perfect leave in for all curlies...especially for those with needy, dry curls. Derived from natural milks (coconut and sweet almond milk), this moisturizing cream will bring life back to your overworked tresses. C
5. Reduce the amount of times per month you heat process your hair. If you currently are doing so 3x a month, cut back to 2x a month with a goal of 1x a month MAX! This will ensure the health and integrity of your hair.
6. Make sure you get regular trims...starting off with an inch or two is a great idea!
