Use the Best Shampoo for Curly Hair

In the midst of the no-poo craze, there has been increased resistance towards the use of shampoo in one’s curly hair care regimen.

This no-poo technique stems from the fear that shampoo will aggravate the scalp, dry out the hair, and ultimately cause breakage.  However, the truth is that all of these things can only happen when the shampoo is chock full of harsh chemical sulfates.  When the word “sulfate” is used, it refers to the detergent compounds within a cleanser, which creates the foamy suds we all love in our shampoo formula or even bath soap.  These sulfates are also known as sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, or ammonium laureth sulfate.  These surfactants are excellent at removing oil from the hair and scalp.  The challenge is that they can also remove the good oil, also known as sebum, that is necessary for hair growth and scalp regulation.  Therefore, choose a gentle, sulfate-free cleansing formula to cleanse and regulate your hair instead.

The Roots of Curly Hair

Since curly hair inevitably leans on the drier side, use only the best shampoo for curly hair, like CURLS Curlicious Cleansing Cream.  Why?  Because when you are growing your healthy hair to new heights or maintaining a healthy crop of hair, there are some protective measures you must have in place to ensure that you receive consistent results: the first of which has to do with the roots!  This is where the magic happens!  As human nature would dictate, it is natural to look to the ends of our tendrils to see the growth.  However, with any goal you set, you must look at the “root” of the problem to get to your end result.

Real Curly Hair Growth

The hair follicle is the point at which new hair sprouts from your scalp.  You can grow strong hair or weak hair based on your daily lifestyle, which includes the food that you consume, vitamins you take, as well as the amount of water you drink and sleeping patterns.  All factors of one’s lifestyle affect the growth patterns, for better or for worse.   For example, with lack of sleep, inconsistent nutrients, or dehydration, your body will not have the necessary energy to produce strong hair strands to support your goals.  However, when these things are present, you will notice your body get to work to create the best hair.

What is difficult to detect at the scalp is the amount of hair sebum that is produced through the sebaceous glands.  This sebum is your natural oil, which lubricates the scalp and supports the hair follicle and hair shaft.  Based on the density and length of your hair, that sebum will naturally spread throughout the strands and protect them from the elements.  Therefore, regulating sebum flow is important.  You can do this by making sure your scalp is clean, allowing for regular flow, in harmony with the body.  Here are the top two ways to effectively keep your hair and scalp clean:

Use a Curl Cleanser

Use a formulated cleanser or shampoo to provide consistent support in maintaining clean hair without stripping the hair and scalp of necessary nutrients.  You can use this based on how often your hair needs cleansing, which is determined by your lifestyle.  If you lead a very active lifestyle, you will tend to sweat at your scalp often; therefore, wash your hair at least once a week (no more than 2-3 times per week) with a sulfate-free, curly hair shampoo.  In between cleansing sessions you may use a co-wash or conditioning rinse to add hydration and refresh your hair until the next weekly cleanse.  On the other hand, if you live a moderately active lifestyle, or do not consider yourself overly active, you may cleanse your hair every two weeks with shampoo for curly hair.  Use CURLS Curlicious Cleansing Cream. In between your cleansing sessions you may also use a conditioner rinse or co-wash as needed.

Use a Clarifying Shampoo

Build up may arise along your hair shaft over time.  This occurs even for women who have a “pretty clean” hair care regimen.  Build-up could result from product usage, or exposure to the elements of nature.  This build up sits on the hair shaft and can easily alter the behavior of the hair, weighing it down or temporarily disrupting the curl.  You can rid yourself of this by clarifying your hair with a formulated clarifying shampoo like CURLS Pure Curls.  The organic formula has natural ingredients like pineapple and grapefruit extract to naturally cleanse the hair while preserving the integrity of the strands.  Use this once every 2-3 months to regulate the hair and scalp.  It is recommended that you do a deep conditioning treatment after using a clarifying shampoo treatment, such as, CURLS Curl Ecstasy Hair Tea Deep Conditioner to thoroughly condition your hair and deeply hydrate and strengthen.
